Velcade® Approved for Initial Therapy of Multiple Myeloma

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Velcade® (bortezomib) as initial therapy for the treatment of multiple myeloma. Velcade is already approved for the treatment of patients with multiple myeloma who have received prior therapies, as well as for patients with mantle cell lymphoma who have received prior therapies. These results were recently published in a press release by Millennium Pharmaceuticals.

Low-dose Steroids Improve Survival in Multiple Myeloma

According to results recently presented at the 2007 annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology, use of low doses of the steroid dexamethasone in combination with Revlimid® (lenalidomide) provided significantly improved survival in multiple myeloma compared with higher-doses of the steroid in this treatment combination.
